This is great!! As I was veganizing all the NYT Cookie Week cookies in December I kept thinking about this, too, like, in this day and age to have no one, not one person, be like "Here's a cookie that doesn't rely on tons of mass-produced eggs and butter," is a...choice. Not to say my reliance on coconut oil for veganizing is a sustainability dream or anything, but it just struck me that the NYT could use the opportunity of a big Holiday Cookie Week to talk about climate, creativity, etc. But they would definitely prefer not to.

Thank you, so glad you enjoyed!! I actually meant to go into the above in my final post, and finish the series with a big old...downer, haha! But I ran out of time and kept things light. So I'm glad someone is highlighting the Patty Melt delusions!

I was looking forward to this when you posted on IG and you don’t disappoint! I’ve been getting so mad about this shit for so long that I barely register the endless hamburger parade of bullshit. It’s exhausting!!!

I love this piece and am happy to be connected to your newsletter. One of the things I talk about a lot when I speak to universities or non-profits (and have written about a lot - I write about food and poverty) is how the higher echelon of food writing is just largely out of touch with how most people eat, or even that so many people around us don't even get to choose their own food. Like they dont have a say in what they have for lunch, let alone how they play a role in the greater food system. And the way big food gets their products into schools and food banks/pantries is criminal because it is setting the taste preferences for generations and getting acolades as they do it. But this isn't sexy and it's hard to make that a fun read. Okay, I'm done now. lol. Looking forward to reading more of your work. Thank you!

Lol at the exclamation mark bit! I really appreciate your critique of food journalism, it’s a nice pair with some things I’m thinking about where the writing I want to do fits with the bigger picture. My training is in journalism but It doesn’t really fit with what I want to do anymore. Trying to get my thoughts to coalesce 🤨

Okay I just spit out my salad reading the lubricated comment. Good piece, and thanks closing with a little levity.

I really appreciate your comment, thank you! I love your writing and think you’re on the right path – FWIW I feel like when we’re uncomfortable and uncertain that’s a sign that we’re digging in the right spot
